Amalfi Paper - from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amalfi paper, also known as Charta Bambagina, is a special and prized type of paper, produced since the middle ages in the Campania city of Amalfi.

Production Method:

Amalfi paper owes its second name, Charta Bambagina, to a special production method which, apart from the use of wood pulp, begins with collecting white rags and strips of linen, cotton and canvas.

In the past, these materials were pulped with spiked hammers powered by watermills (still visible today in the region) but nowadays they are processed with more sophisticated machinery which allows for better refinement.

After being dissolved in water, the fibres, both then and now, are formed by hand into sheets, using racks made of brass and bronze wires, and even bear watermarks with the coats of arms of the ancient, noble families of the city.
